I came across this pattern a number of years ago, up in Montana, at Tim Tollett’s Frontier Anglers in Dillon…Since then, I have seen it’s appearance on a number of other knowledgeable sites – shops, guides and a few tiers. Here are two versions that I employ for the East Walker River around this time of year. The original pattern is tied with a tungsten bead. I use both tungsten and brass for my ties – it all depends on the depth I wish to fish the fly. The general colors are: black, red, rust, olive and golden. I also tie them in yellow and gray…
HOOK: TMC 2488, TMC 2487, Daiichi 1130, Mustad c49s, #18-#22

TAIL: Lemon Wood Duck Fibers
RIB: Wapsi wire, Chartreuse, x-sm
WING LOOP: Olive Krystal Flash…(the original pattern uses just one strand of KF on each side of the thorax) I like the loop… ![]()
THORAX: Olive/Brown Ice Dub
WING CASE: Scud Back, 1/8″, Black
BEAD: Copper…or your call. 1/16 brass or tungsten
Michael when he was…er, “SMALLER”, Fly Fishing through a section of the East Walker River that hold small May flies aplenty…which is what the Tailwater Tiny imitates…

This is a “Killer Pattern” on this tailwater…the yellow one works real fine about 60 miles South of the East Walker, on another Eastern Sierra fishery…

PT,
A neat little trick with brass beads… Toss them into a jar of salt water for at least 48 hours. Shake the jar every so often to stir up the beads and water. When you take them out to dry, you’ll notice the beads will give you more of a natural look, instead of the factory shine you get in the package.
I’ve caught fish both ways, however its worth a look, especially if your dealing with fish that have seen every pattern in the book!
