So Michael calls me last night and tells me he caught some nice Trout on the Swift River in MA…I am waiting for the photos * (SEE BELOW)…It seems they liked some of the Midge patterns I put in his box…s. While he is away, I am focusing on some Caddis patterns that work well in high water conditions (’cause that is ALL there is in the West). Here is one…
OLIVE BUTCH CADDIS (Kelly Galloup) -top view
HOOK: TMC 900 BL, #14-#18, TMC 101 #16-#18, TMC 100 SPBL. #14-#18
THREAD: Uni., 8/0, 6/0 or GSP 100 or 200, Olive
EGG SAC: Zelon, Green
BODY: Stalcups Micro Fine Dry Fly Dub. BWO Olive
UNDER WING: Zelon, Kinky Light Dun
WING: White Tail Deer Hair
LEGS: Speckled Centipede Legs, Mini-Olive, Montana Fly CO
BROWN BUTCH CADDIS…#18, TMC 100SPBL…
I will be tying more up in Tan, Amber, Grey and Brown. The Weekly Fly has an excellent tutorial for this pattern HERE. I will also be adding some Caddis patterns that incorporate Snow Shoe Hare that are excellent floaters too…may need them all the way through August…
Just arrived:
“Hey dad, here’s the photos from today…only a few. More next time. I fished the swift river in the catch and release portion from the y-pool down towards the bridge (about half a mile or so). I was only out there for about two hours. Caught this one, about 15 inches, and lost a couple, but it was a pretty busy day, but I only saw two people pull in any fish. I saw a little surface action as I was leaving, but some storms were moving in so I wanted to get back home. The y-pool itself was too crowded, so I ventured downstream. “swift” is definitely a misnomer. It’s the slowest, clearest water I’ve fished, much different than anything I’ve really nymphed. I THINK it was the Yeller Feller that this one took. I think I had another strike on this one, and one on a cream midge. More to come in a few days…I want to fish the Swift again earlier in the day, and maybe try the deerfield. Maybe try the farmington this weekend…”
I understand what “GIN CLEAR” means…
I put his Fly Boxes and “minimalist gear” in one of these… I got for him, just before he boarded his flight back East…
FISHPOND TUMBLEWEED CHEST PACK…
Now I want one !!!
* Michael reported to me this AM (7.12.2011), that he caught a “20 Rainbow, on a “Humpy”, on the Swift yesterday evening… ![]()

Just stumbled on this blog and love it
Love that fly! big producer for me on nantahala river. Floats all day. Thanks for posting. Two tyers who post great stuff are Rich Strolis and Juan Ramirez who are on vimeo.
Dr Feelgood,
I am linked to Juan Ramirez at THE HOPPER JUAN and Rich Strolis is a member of and contributor to TROUT PREDATOR ONLINE…(his home river is the Farmington) which my son Michael is fishing later this week – hopefully with Aaron Jasper who created TPO. Both fellows ARE exceptional guides and tiers !!!
