My first attempt at fly fishing was in August 1975 on a trip with two friends from Germany (Fritz Wepper and Berend Abstung) to the Gold River on Vancouver Island B.C. I had purchased a 12 ft. fiberglass rod, Pflueger reel and a 8wt. line to which I had affixed a lead core line. We spent several days camping at various lakes in the Gold River area and I fished the outfit with dark patterned #6 and #8 wet flies. On my first day casting, I nearly removed my right ear while casting this rig!
