Most of the little fellas that are in these two Wheatly swing leaf Fly boxes were designed / filled to be used in these waters…
The flies in these six inch boxes represent most of the hatching May Fly nymphs, some Caddis Pupa and Midges I encounter…
I find Duns in here, molting after a hatch…
The Madison River, MT just above $3.00 Bridge, at sunrise, on a soon to be warm July day…Many fisherman who come here never get to see this…they are sleeping in…
Many of them are quite small…I like using Midges until the water warms uu…
A stretch of the Stillwater River, MT, late in the afternoon when a Caddis Pupa would do nicely…
Ally has already taken some Rainbows on dries on this river…
I see some work needs to be done in here..one too many dunkings and not letting the flies and box dry out throughly…
Michael rigs up on the Boulder River, MT to try his hand…
At working a dry/dropper in here…The Boulder River, MT…
Ally scrutinizes Michael’s technique in the channels section of the Madison River, MT…
YIKES!!!…I really must learn how to keep my chest above water…
Ally contemplates the scenery on the Madison River, MT above Ennis Lake…
A Rainbow that took the dropper on the Stillwater River, MT…
Getting to be sunset on the Madison River, MT…SUPER HOLE by that mid-current rock…

I have one hell of a time getting my flies in or out of my boxes if I pack them that tight. Do you use hemo’s to do it?
I know what you mean about leaky fly boxes. I bought some of the Scientific Anglers leak proof boxes and they work great at keeping water out… and in! Make sure they’re dry when you put them in or the condensation will wreak havoc on your flies!
Filson makes a nice low profile vest that rides 6 inches higher than most. It doesn’t have many pockets though but I’m a bit of a minimalist anyway. I think I’ll be getting one soon.
Great looking flies by the way.
Jim,
I use some really long tweezers with a hole drilled into the flat, back end – attached to a zinger. If I have used one of those Wheatley boxes on the river, I keep it open overnight and prop the middle leaf upright. If i have gone for a swim…I use a blow dryer to dry the flies and foam out. Sometimes, I am so tired after fishing from sun up to sun down – that I forget. I push the wading envelope and…I fall in… a lot…

Dang you need to just send me one of those nymph boxes…I know you got to many on hand! Nice flies! Phillip
Phillip,
Ummm, those will hopefully be passed on. Ally has suggested a 12 Step program for fly tiers…

Hey PT!
i have a quick question that I thought for sure you (or someone that follows the site) could answer. I am getting married at the end of August. I’d like to give my groomsmen a nice engraved Wheatley fly box as a gift. Do you know of anyone in the area (I live in Bozeman) that sells Wheatley boxes? Or of an online store that could get ’em to me in time enough to get them engraved? I’m tying like crazy to have enough flies to fill them.
Thanks.
