So these  will be emergers, duns and maybe a spinner or two along with more detailed information on the little guys that are available almost year round and the most important May Fly hatch perhaps anywhere…Gary LaFontaine had a book in the works, at one time, on Blue Winged Olives. It was never completed prior to his passing. I would have definitely enjoyed having a copy of THAT…Here are some great resources for learning more about the Baetis Complex…books and links…

This is a composite of John Barr’s BWO Emerger and Carl Pennington’s Biot Emerger ,using a Black Holographic wing case. Why Black ??? Because BWO’s are most active when their wing cases darken, just prior to hatching…This pattern is meant to be fished from the bottom of the water column to just under the surface. Grease thy leader or hang it off a larger dry pattern…I prefer the wing case be pronounced as a trigger…

I like using the TMC 103BL hooks for thin patterns. I also like using Roman Moser Shock Gum Loops when using these more fragile hooks and just generally too. They add about a Lb. of strength to the tippet material being used and lessen the straightening of said hooks on larger Trout that take the fly in heavy water…these are the shock gum loops:

The “Dancing Caddis” pattern, a Gary LaFontaine design, appears in his 1981 tome –” CADDISFLIES”, (pages 51-61)

CADDISFLIES GLF

Those pages include an SBS for tying the pattern (* pay particular attention to step # 6).Below is the hook design that Gary La Fontaine settled on for this pattern…

PARTRIDGE K3A SWEDISH DRY FLY HOOK

PARTRIDGE K3A Swedish Dry Fly Hook… The Swedish dry fly hooks were designed in Sweden by Nils Eriksson and Gunnar Johnson who were well known Swedish fly tyers. Partridge first made them in 1979. Good luck to finding them now – in quantity.  So, I used this:

GAMAKSTSU C-16B HOOK

GAMAKATSU C-16B Cripple/ Emerger Hook…

GAMAKATSU C16-B HOOKS

The hooks, in various sizes…

He states, in his book, that the new fly proved very effective with both dead-drift and twitch presentations. It worked as a flush imitation on fish that were feeding selectively on passive female Caddis, and it also worked as well as a high-riding imitation on fish that were feeding on active females.

Am imitation tied on an upside-down hook could be effective for all types of adult Caddisflies, the fly not only resting on the wing edges and body, but also skating on them. Without the hook to interfere, one fly could simulate the important characteristics whether drifting, drag-free or moving.Further tactics for fishing this pattern may be found on pages 128 – 134 in the book. The key to the success of this fly pattern is the twin streaks of light created on the water by the wing edges of this skating pattern (pg. 54). The Gamakatsu C16-B hook is probably the best currently available hook to compliment this design and provide the desired effect of those streaks.

So Michael was here over the Holidays, bugging me for more flies to use this year on the rivers he fishes outside of N.Y.C. These will be some fly patterns that BOTH of us can use this coming Spring. Looks like there might be a bunch of water in the Eastern Sierras this year and I would like to try these on the East Walker River and the Owens River as well. There will be eighteen patterns in all, several will be tied in two different sizes, to accommodate our needs…When Michael comes out in the next few weeks (April) he will be taking some of these to tryout on the rivers he fishes in NY, MA, and CT…

This is a pattern that has been around for awhile and mentioned frequently in the BRF Newsletter. Try and find a recipe for it ! Maybe Craig Matthews will do a video on this bug at some point in the future. And HERE it is (5.26 2016) In the meantime, I went with an approximation gathered from this location. Notice that the BRF version is tied on a TMC 2488 hook and the other on a TMC 206 BL hook…I like the former for this pattern…
