Before I put up the Montana photos, I wanted to show these new hooks I picked up while I was in Bozeman, MT. These are Firehole Sticks which were purchased at the Family Fly Shop:

FIRE HOLE OUTDOORS

FAMILY FLY SHOP, BOZEMAN, MT

These hooks are designed and marketed  by Joe Mathis whom I’ve known for the past eight years through his Fly Recipes Site. If you are a member of the Facebook Group – “Fly Tying With Uncle Cheech”, then you are most likely aware of these hooks. A lot of people there are now tying on them and quite satisfied …

So I got this BOX… and decided to fill it with soft hackle fly patterns for our trip to Montana ( me & Michael).None of these patterns were tied with lead so that they would be legal to use on Yellowstone National Park waters. I finished the box just before going up to the Sierras with my family and with the express purpose of getting my Grandson Miles into his first Trout. He was enamored with this fly box and got me to let him use a couple of flies herein. Good move on his part, one of the below fly patterns just wiped ’em out… 🙂

Sierra Brookie…(8,23.2017)

Hoover Wilderness….

Michael says bring MORE soft hackles… :)…8.23.2017

COMPLETED FALL SOFT HACKLE BOX…

RICHARD WHEATLEY 6″ BLACK BOX…

Somebody was on Willowemoc Creek on July 29 – 30… 🙂

Something to get flies down quick that is not lead (suggested for 4x leaders and larger)…Lead is a big No-No in YNP, in flies or on leaders and tippets…

This batch is just about ready to go into the box…

INTERIOR…

Many of the patterns going inside will be hackled with THIS:

…and THIS, because Fall is a great time to swing soft hackle fly patterns in the waters in and around Yellowstone National ParkEverything in this box will be soft hackle patterns…Starting with this:

This will be a selection of various patterns for waters in the greater Yellowstone National Park area in September. Besides fishing the Madison River outside of the park, Michael wants to visit some of the other locations in the park that he has not been to. This LINK provides an overview of some of those places…and these are the REGULATIONS for fishing in Yellowstone National Park…None of these patterns use lead or lead sub. in their construction…

I first tied some of these soft hackles up back in 2014 because I like to use peacock and partridge SH’s on high elevation lakes in the Eastern Sierras. I have also used the natural peacock and partridge soft hackle on various stretches of the Madison River from Ennis up to Raynolds Pass with success in the early Summer and Fall. I have a very strong suspicion that these purple guys are going to take a lot of nice Trout on this upcoming trip…

This is a variation on Kelly Galloup’s $3,00 Bridge Serendipity using a wide gape heavy hook and the “Special JuJu”  Grizzly Krystal Flash. I don’t know exactly why, but this Grizzly Krystal Flash, incorporated into nymph and midge patterns, can really make a great day of Trout fishing…

So this is a variant on a Montana Fly Co. pattern that I wanted to include in my selection of attractors to use on the Madison and some other waters when Michael and I go to Montana. Serendipities can mimic a great number of bugs in the biomass and are very useful sub-surface searching patterns. I employ them on moving waters wherever we go…

LITTLE GREEN DRAKE — (DRUNELLA FLAVILINEA)

HOOK SIZES 14, 16

Flavs are a big deal on the Henry’s Fork, but they are often overshadowed in the mind of anglers on the Madison by PMDs. This is a big mistake. Their imitations are necessary not only for rising fish, but also make superb searching patterns.
