So these  will be emergers, duns and maybe a spinner or two along with more detailed information on the little guys that are available almost year round and the most important May Fly hatch perhaps anywhere…Gary LaFontaine had a book in the works, at one time, on Blue Winged Olives. It was never completed prior to his passing. I would have definitely enjoyed having a copy of THAT…Here are some great resources for learning more about the Baetis Complex…books and links…

This is a composite of John Barr’s BWO Emerger and Carl Pennington’s Biot Emerger ,using a Black Holographic wing case. Why Black ??? Because BWO’s are most active when their wing cases darken, just prior to hatching…This pattern is meant to be fished from the bottom of the water column to just under the surface. Grease thy leader or hang it off a larger dry pattern…I prefer the wing case be pronounced as a trigger…

These are some patterns that we use up on high elevation lakes in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. I put together some simple little soft hackle ties that work extraordinarily well for me and my guys. I generally use these  fly patterns in sizes #12 – #18 and vary the retrieve based on what the Trout are liking at any given time…I also used some other patterns that I have wanted to try out on this trip, in a lake. Those will be included in my next post . The largest fish I took, on this trip was 4lbs.(end of post). I won’t go into numbers, but I caught more fish in a day and a half of fishing than I have EVER caught on Little Virginia Lake…

The following photos are panoramic pictures of various places that involve mountains, rivers, lakes and a kid with her favorite desert…Thanks to my daughter Nadia, I can play around with them and put them up…Most will be used as kind of “rotating header” through the coming months. Until Nadia assisted me, they were going nowhere. I have this nifty little feature on an older Olympus Stylus Epic that I picked many years ago…that camera has been in the drink several times … Being old school, I keep using all of my film cameras…I just like ’em…

So Michael says to me, as we are coming around this curve on the way to the Stillwater River…”COOL DAD, ROADKILL…stop I want to shoot it!!!” Here it is…I should have bagged the remains for Fly Tying…good deer hair on the parts that weren’t scattered all over the place…

This is one of many Trout on the wall at Dan Bailey’s Fly Shop in Livingston, Montana… Michael went berserk taking photos of almost every fish on the wall..I didn’t know he was using the panorama feature…that costs one hell of a lot of $$$ to print up…oh well…

This is a great spot on the Madison River, above $3.00 Bridge at sunset…Ally and I scored some nice Browns and Rainbows here…

Little Virginia Lake up above Bridgeport, CA…just about sunset when a Retro Caddis will put a bend in ‘yer rod…Michael had a bunch of “bends” on this particular evening…

The backyard at Montana Hanna’s in Nye, MT… unfortunately this primo eatery, saloon and fly shop is in a state of flux at the present moment…perhaps, it will open again?…

Ally and her favorite desert..at the Continental Divide Restaurant in Ennis, MT…that would be creme brulee she is preparing to devour…with an “evil” look…

The Stillwater River, South of Buffalo Jump, MT…a great place to fish Caddis dries in the evening….

Ally, taking a break before the evening hatch on the Madison River, MT…above $3.00 Bridge…

Ennis Lake at sunset…me and Ally had been down in Beartrap Canyon and decided to leave before dark (good idea)…Ally took this picture…

Madison River below Varney Bridge… I have caught many nice Browns in this back channel…and no driftboats go through here…unless they are totally lost…

Sunrise coming up over the Absarokee Mountains…Michael has a fascination with sunrises…me…SUNSETS

Down in the Channels Section of the Madison River, North of Ennis, before the lake…

There is one Big Brown in this water near Varney Bridge…I know, he broke me off…

Everyone of the little islands in the channels section of the Madison River have nice fish lurking around them… I like to FF in here in the early Summer and Fall…

Anyone who FF’s the Eastern Side of the Sierras knows this place… this was just after the first October snowfall…

Another nice stretch of the Madison below Varney Bridge…

Another view of the Absarokee Mountains near Roscoe, MT…on the road to Red Lodge…

My favorite section of the Stillwater River…

A Rainbow Trout that Michael captured, on film, somewhere…

The backway into Bridgeport, CA from Yerington, NV…this is a spectacular drive…

I have been Fly Fishing in the Bridgeport, CA area since late 1974. It has always been one of my favorite spots in the Eastern Sierras to visit

Back in the day, there were no shoulder to shoulder crowds – one could have the East Walker River to themselves… Then came “THE MOVIE”. There are still many places to find solitude if one is willing to walk…what follows are some photos, through the years, of me and the kids and some places we wet our lines…

Bridgeport, CA…a gem in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains…

Michael, working the willows with a RAM Caddis, along the bank of the East Walker River on a hot August day…many years ago…

The wee tyke Ally, hanging with the fellas on the East Walker River…just over her right shoulder is the little island that no longer exists in the meadow section…

Ally, getting mentally prepared for a day on Little Virginia Lake..fly and bubble or just a fly rod?…

Ally, looking down the mountain towards Bridgeport in the East at twilight in the Fall…

Bridgeport Res. in the background after a day on Trumbull Lake…

Looking West towards Nevada from a high vantage point off the road to Virginia Lakes…

Virginia Creek canyon in the Fall, lots of Brookies and Mule deer in here…

Seal Bugger and Bubble day on Little Virginia Lake,,,we were the ONLY people there that day…late Fall…

Michael, changing patterns on the East Walker River…

Michael, learning how to roll cast his nymph inches off the bank and under the overhanging willows…where the “BIG BOYS” lie…East Walker River…

Michael, up in the canyon on the West Walker River…Burke’s Aggravators # 10, punched ’em here…this day…

Hello Mr. Trout…

A Chart. Seal Bugger, Rainbow and PT

Michael re-rigs on the West Walker River…

That looks like some nice water!!!…

So…Michael prepares to drop his fly into it…

If one is fortunate enough to visit this area, I highly recommend contacting the fellows at Ken’s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport. Jim Reid, the owner and operator of that emporium, has been a good friend for a very long time. It is also possible to follow his FB Page for updates on conditions and good places to fish…the East Walker Forum is currently shut down…Also visit my good bud, Carolyn (a Fly Tier par excellence) at Virginia Lakes Resort, …

My Daughter Nadia came across these photographs ( and a lot more) that I did not know I had. These are a mixed bunch of our visits to Montana through the years…I LOVE that state…

The Fly Fisherman Statue in Ennis, MT…

The Channels Section of the Madison River at sunset…Ally’s apparition appears in the BG…maybe it’s a BIG TROUT?…

Where one does not want to tread if they are fishing below Varney Bridge on the Madison…stay below the high water mark…

Michael trudges along the road on the Upper Boulder River, MT…

Lots of nice Trout in here…Channels Section, Madison River, MT…

Ranch along the road near Nye, MT and the Stillwater River…

Another nice stretch of water among the islands in the channels section of the Madison River, Valley Gardens…Near Ennis, MT…

Michael working to the bank on the Stillwater River, MT…

Outdoor dining at Montana Hanna’s, between Fishtail and Nye, MT….yummy…

Ally, bankin’ it on the Madison River, channels section…

Ally, on a hot and humid day on The Madison River, MT…

There be some big TROUT, just around the bend!!!…

Ally, fixin’ a rod wrap…on the Madison River…

Michael with a nice Trout below Varney Bridge…

Michael working a seam in the channels section of the Madison River, MT…

Michael changes patterns with a let up in the wind…

Looking down towards Ennis, MT…that is a FIRE starting in the Gallatins to the right hand side of the photo…Ally and I drove down fro Gardiner to Livingston two days later at night…the fire had become HUGE…

Up at $3.00 Bridge on the Madison…”The River is right over there!”…

Ally and Michael “pow-wow” on the Madison…planning the evening’s strategy…
