FALL BAETIS / BWO’s…2012…(COMPLETED)

A whole mess of ’em coming up –  with an emphasis on Gray and Olive/Gray…and this time..I’ll put the recipes in as I finish each dozen…

What it says…

PHEASANT & FOLDED FOAM (Gray Baetis) EMERGER – Gantner/Variant…

RIB: Wapsi Ultra Wire, Silver, x-sm

ABDOMEN: Pheasant Tail Fibers, #16. Muskrat Gray – Nature’s Spirit

HACKLE: Medium Dun Saddle

WING: Wapsi Razor Foam, .5MM, Translucent Dun – Folded over double…the hackle windings tip it forward
A John Gantner pattern I have put up before using different ingredients. It may be tied as an adult, emerger or cripple depending on the tailing material. It is a good one !!!

Michael working the water in the “Wild Trout Section” of the Lower Owens River…

2TONE FOAM SPLIT WING CRIPPLE – (Gray/Olive Baetis)…Howard Cole/Variant…

HOOK: Daiichi 1100, #18 – #22

RIB: Black Ice Thread

THORAX: UV 2 Fine & Dry Adams Grey

WING CASE: Wapsi Razor Foam, Translucent Dun, .5MM

WINGS: Hi-Vis #7, Black

Another interesting pattern from Howard Cole to use when the Trout are looking up top…the black wings are so I can see it on Gray, overcast days…that Turkey biot back is the other variation I was talking about to give the pattern differing tones…

SNOWSHOE MESS (Knock Down Dun) – Gray Baetis…Schollmeyer/Matthews-Variant…

HOOK: TMC 2488, #16 -#22

THREAD: Danville 6/0 Gray – Abdomen…Tiemco 16/0 Gray – Thorax forward

TAIL: Dun Snowshoe Hare’s Foot

WINGS: Dun Snowshoe Hare’s foot

THORAX: on #16 – #18 – UV 2 Fine and Dry Adams Gray

It does not get any easier than this…Jim Schollmeyer calls it “The Snowshoe Mess”…the “Knock Down Dun”, using Zelon is tied HERE by Craig Matthews…it may also be ties using Hi-Vis, Sparkle Emerger Yarn or CDC…Snowshoe Hare floats the best and longer than any of the other materials…

Our favorite kind of day along the Lower Owens River…

IRON BRIDGE UV 2 BATTIS…(GRAY BAETIS) -Jurgens/Variant…

My variation pattern that has been around for a very long time, based on the WD 40. Other variants on this theme, which work well in the eastern Sierras and other places may be found HERE…I like CDC, for the wing stub, because it traps air bubbles. I tie a lot of RS 2’s using CDC too –  and fish both patterns from the bottom to the top of the water column…

Ally takes a Baetis break to engage in her favorite pastime…

CHIDING McGEE FLYMPH-Baetis Gray/Olive…

When I put a photo up,of the half-full box, on my FB Page,  Allen McGee chided me for not having any FLYMPH patterns included. From Allen’s book : “Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs” pg. # 9. , “Pete Hidy coined the term ‘flymph’ to better describe the wingless wet fly as used to imitate emerging caddisfly pupae and mayfly nymphs.”… This is for Allen… they work real good fished as a dropper or alone, dead drifted, swung or using the Leisenring Lift or induced take method…

BEAD: Black Tungsten or Brass, 1/16″

Something buggy and fuzzy for non-hatching Baetis/BWO’s in the drift…these guys will have darkened wing cases just prior to hatching…in that case use Black Krystal Flash, Black Holographic Mylar Motion 1/32″ or some other dark material that suits one’s fancy…

LIL’ OLIVE/GRAY BAETIS EMERGER …

THORAX: UV 2 Scud Shrimp Grey – Spirit River – …yessss

LEGS: Ruffed Grouse fibers

This is more of an attractor/searching type  Baetis/BWO nymph in the tradition of weird stuff I tie that generally works real good in the Eastern Sierras. Why…??? Because the Trout have not seen it before and it incorporates some trigger elements that have worked for me in the past…like that Red KF Wing Case and fuzzy thorax…I don’t worry about my patterns ever winding up in a shadow box…they are meant to catch the Trouties…

HACKLE: Split by WINGASE – Starling

BEAD: Black Tungsten #18 – 5/64″ #20 – 1/16

Micro tubing has all kinds of uses…this is one for small, two toned patterns. I will be using something else – unconventional, on another Baetis/BWO nymph pattern…

WING: Premium CDC, Medium Dun, (TroutHunter)

THORAX: Hare-Tron Dubbin, Dark Brown

GLASS BEAD: Diamond, Killer Caddis, 15/0, Midge

The RS-2, developed and designed by Rim Chung, is one of those must patterns for any fly box. It is like a Pheasant Tail or WD-40 when one needs useful Baetis/BWO patterns for Spring, Fall or anytime – anywhere…it JUST WORKS. This is a bit of a take off, with a micro tube abdomen and Glass Bead. The late Shane Stalcup has this pattern in his book, “Mayflies – Top to Bottom”. He uses partridge for legs…I started using this pattern long ago and used them exclusively (with glass beads),for two weeks, on the Madison River, at $3.00 Bridge – to test their effectiveness. They are machines…this variation may be tied in many colors using various shades of micro tubing, differing thread colors beneath the abdomen and fine dubbings…

KG would be Kelly Glissmeyer, whose patterns can regularly be seen over on FAOL. This is a good one that I have, as usual, tweaked a bit…the addition of the MF legs and sparkle emerger yarn shuck…(Kelly uses Zelon). A little dumpster diving will provide a wealth of that electronics packing foam, which has numerous applications…This fly works most excellent as a trailer, just below the surface film…

This is a pattern that just screams for additional research, refinement and creativity…right now, it is what it is…The diving female Baetis actually crawls down rock, boulders, dead falls , protruding detritus and probably, the exposed wader legs of fly fisherman into the water and under rocks to lay their eggs clusters. After mating in the air, they are often joined by the Baetis males…I know of no other species of May fly in which this behavior occurs…RALPH CUTTER has done interesting research into this phenomena… One of my favorite places to use Baetis patterns of ALL types…The Madison River at $3.00 Bridge..lots of rocks…

Female Baetis flies, on the rock…

DIVING BAETIS SPINNER

HOOK: TMC 100, #16-#22 or Daiichi 1100, #16-#22

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 sheer, olive or dark Brown

TAILS: Dun Micro Fibetts

EGG SAC: Olive-Yellow or Rusty Brown dubbing

ABDOMEN: Olive or Rusty Brown Goose or Turkey Biot, to match the naturals color

THORAX: Pearl Bead

WING: Z-wing or Tan or Gray raffia ( Swiss Straw)

HACKLE: Starling

This particular rendition is from Allen McGee …it may also be viewed here at WESTFLY– where the egg sac seems to be missing…this pattern is best presented on a tight line and dead drifted…the spinners are washed away after completing their mission and won’t be returning to the surface, unless pushed there by the current…

Here is some interesting additional information on the Baetis species that hatch on the Madison River in Montana from Reel Fly Fishing

This guy was doing some very successful Tout fishing of his own, one morning on the Madison…I was using Baetis, he was using his beak and talons,  diving from 150 + feet off the river…

This is Charlie Craven’s Purple Jujubaetis, developed three years ago as an offshoot of the original Jujubaetis. Charlie’s flies –  JUST CATCH FISH… According to a great article Walter Wiese wrote for  Flyfishing & Tying Journal, “Charlie (Craven) suggests fishing the Purple Jujubaetis under gray skies or during rain and snow storms, in other words, when Baetis mayflies are most active”.

LIKE THIS:

This pattern was developed as an experiment, but after Charlie’s son tried it out on Colorado’s Blue and other Colorado rivers and received rave reviews, he started production tying them. It is suggested to fish this pattern in tandem with an imitative pattern. Charlie says this pattern usually wins out…

The Batwing Pattern was developed by Tracy Peterson. This is the PMD Emerger based on his design. I first saw this pattern in The Flyfishing & Tying Journal in Spring 2006. I tied up a bunch of the Batwing Baetis Emergers in #16-#20 and just whacked the Trout in here:

Owens River, below 5 Bridges…

This pattern can play a number of different roles – drowned natural, a cripple, a stillborn emerger and even a spinner. This fly may be fished from the bottom of the water column to just under the syrface film. It makes a great dropper…I keep about eighteen of sizes #16 -#20 in my arsenal at all times…Michael puts a lot of these little fellows in the the stream vegetation…

The materials needed for this tie…

No, not the Wooly Bugger pattern…These are two nymphs from Rowan Nyman who ties for The Montana Fly Company. He has two of these little guys he put together, one imitates a Baetis and the other a PMD…Both patterns are available from Blue Ribbon Flies. The Baetis is available from Dream Drift Flies. They also offer a good portion of MFC products . Craig Matthews is touting the Thin Mint PMD in his current BRF Newsletter… Rowan Nyman used to work out of his shop and came up with the great Shop Vac pattern there…

I recently received the annual catalog (2010 Edition one of the BEST around) from The Fly Shop in Redding, CA.It featured this useful tidbit on it’s fly patterns pages. One may now click on any fly in their on-line store and, along with an additional prompt to ” add to the shopping cart”, find the recipe for any and every fly in their catalog and some that are not.

*NOTE: I was informed that all of the recipes are not up as of this writing. The Fly Shop will be adding recipes on a regular basis until they are all up*

I found that I had to reload before this feature worked for me as I transitioned from pattern to pattern. I really enjoy visiting this store when I travel North, up the I-5 to Oregon. They have a great staff, excellent guides and a comprehensive selection of everything Fly Fishing. There are also some of the best rivers in the state to Fly Fish in the immediate area…

Their fly selection is overwhelming and this new feature is a wonderful plus for those who tie and are interested in fly ingredients…

One of the truly great tiers left us this past Sunday, September 6, 2009. He created a number of patterns that have served me well through the years. This pattern, THE USUAL, got me started on tying with Snowshoe Hare. Fran’s Ausable Wulff has brought me endless hours of enjoyment on the Stillwater River in Montana with my son Michael and daughter Ally…
