Posts Tagged ‘Al Ritt FLY TIER’

This will be a continuation of the previous post. However, these will be some dry flies I have been wanting to complete before Spring in the Eastern Sierras and before Michael, Aimee (maybe Ally?) and I go to Montana this Summer. A lot of my ties in the next couple of months will be focused on that MT trip…

Finally, next to the last day of the year. This group includes Larvae, Pupa, Emergers and Adults. Several are being tied for Michael to toss in some water back East. He’s  gone on a dry fly bender, so a couple of these will meet his needs for catching some sippers and slurpers while his fingers freeze…I had an inquiry from a reader beyond the U.S. about where to find a substitute for the Iridescent Peacock colors from Spirit River in Europe. There ain’t none. I am not aware of anything (including the “other colored peacock” from a U.S. source) that even comes close to the quality of the SR material I use in many of my fly patterns…If ya’ want the real deal, SPIRIT RIVER  will ship it to ya’ !… a tying friend of mine received it in Serbia…

This is a suspender Midge pattern using the Daiichi “Klinkhammer Hook” that comes in black nickel or bronze. Do not be opposed to using Pheasant Tail fibers for patterns with abdomens that hang below the surface film. Once well soaked, they are very effective. I usually will cut Snow Shoe hair wings with scissors (like Jim Schollmeyer does) rather than lining up the tips…the Trout don’t care and it’s faster. One may substitute Poly Yarn,Puglisi Trigger Point Int’l Fibers, CDC , Foam or Electronic packaging for the Wing Case and Wing..all float better than deer hair…If desired, put a shuck on it…

WING(s): Grizzly Krystal Flash – Copper/Blue

THORAX: Ice Dub, UV Dun

BEAD: Copper Tungsten, sized to hook

I am using the White, Semperfli, Nano Silk in 18/0 as the base for this pattern. It is slippery as all get out so I use two half hitches to secure it to the hook when first wrapping it on the shank. For this pattern, it adds to the translucence of the abdomen and as a refltor for the UV Ice Dub in the Thorax. Blue is a color, in Midges and other patterns, that have taken good fish for me and the crew throughout the year, for Rainbows and Browns – not just in the Winter. Michael got the Brown below on a “Moo’s Blue Midge” on the East Walker River in September…

mikes-bday-brn-ewr-21

Michael’s Birthday Brown…East Walker River…as my friend, Jim Reid, who owns Ken’s Sporting Goods, in Bridgeport, CA, once said – “There are times when Browns ‘turn on’ to the color Blue.” Best to have some when THAT happens…

Yup……these are some patterns I will be putting in the East Walker River box for May 2014…some things I have wanted to tie up for awhile. If one has never been to Bridgeport, CA, where the East Walker River is located, I would not plan on rushing up there this Spring/Summer/Fall, unless the intention is to fish the reservoir or higher elevation lakes. We are in the third year of a drought which has seen very little snowpack in the Sierras…Bridgeport Reservoir will not be anywhere near this full:

IMGP0290

The RES.  – Spring 2011…it was full – then…I will not fish the East Walker during the stated periods unless the flows are at least 100-125cfs.

Something in a PMD to hang in the surface film when these Western bugs are hatching…any where. If it is cold and raining, they will trickle off for most of an afternoon. The Trout know this…I like this hook form cripple/emerger patterns…

A simple soft hackle using a different material for the thorax…and for some reaso, that olive dun color works in certain places, the Stillwater River in MT being one such place. In the materials photo, note the Matarelli Bobbin. It was designed to hold Persall’s Silk thread. Get one before they disappear… forever…

This is just a generic peacock soft hackle with a hot butt and bead…for use in lakes, I would omit the bead. I have a lot of success with these types of soft hackle patterns and will eventually tie them in Purple, Black, Red, Orange, Blue and Dun…using different hen hackling, starling and partridge .Me thinks they would take a couple of Trout on this water…

THORAX: Mink body hair, Natural Brown

A simple Brassie pattern that may be tied on straight or curved hooks. I started coating the wire wraps with Dave’s Flexament, then UV Resin several years ago, up in Montana. This pattern really works well on reddish bottomed stream beds like the Stillwater in MT. I use it during the first PMD hatches that occur there just when the run off starts, in late June – early July and fish it along the edges and softer water. Use different colored wires for other bottom conditions but stick with mink for the thorax because of it’s ability to retain air bubbles…Mink is now available in a lot of dyed colors – use it !

This is an older BRF/Craig Matthew’s pattern that was designed for that “greasy sunlight”, just at dusk, on the Madison River. The black wing helps the angler see the fly under those lighting conditions. The wing material is treated with WATERSHED. so it floats real nice…
