Posts Tagged ‘Craig Matthew’s Caddis Pattern’

These are nineteen patterns for Michael to use back East this Spring and Summer. Because I do not Fly Fish in the East, I have relied upon patterns by folks who primarily do. When my son wants Catskill dries, I will take him to Dette Trout Flies in Roscoe, NY and buy some for him. Some of these are Western pattern variants  that have slowly drifted to and found favor with some of those in the regions of the less inclined…The MOO will let me know…

LITTLE CADDIS THING

LITTLE CADDIS THING (Hydropsyche/Ceratopsyche) – Petersen/Variant …

HOOK: Daiichi 1110, #16- #18

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Dark Brown

ABDOMEN: Micro Fine Dry Fly Dub, Cinnamon

THORAX: X-tremely Fine Natural Dubbing, #.25, Cinnamon Caddis – Nature’s Spirit

WING(s): CDC Natural Mallard, 2 feathers each side, orientation outward. Outside feather is pulled back by stem and tied down, providing  outriggers

ANTENNAE: Natural Pheasant Tail Fibers.

This is a Tracy Petersen dry Caddis pattern that smokes ’em. It first appeared in the Summer 2006 Issue of Flyfishing & Tying Journal (pg. 59). Tracy tied the original with an abdomen of twisted CDC. I used dubbing because it is not quite as fragile. To match other Caddis, I would suggest using Trouthunter CDC or CDC from these other two sources…HERE and HERE

THORAX: Light Tan Beaver

BATWING: Fluff from the base of a Dun Hen Neck feather, tied cover side up and pulled over the thorax and bead

BEAD: Killer Caddis Diamond Bead, SM

I particularly like Tracy Petersen’s  Bat Wing series of Mayflies to match “clingers”…the May Fly that exits it’s shuck, at the bottom of the water column and emerges as an adult. The original pattern calls for the use of a hen neck feather, not partridge and there are plenty of hen necks around to match almost any May Fly wing… Grade #2 or #3 works fine…

Yup……these are some patterns I will be putting in the East Walker River box for May 2014…some things I have wanted to tie up for awhile. If one has never been to Bridgeport, CA, where the East Walker River is located, I would not plan on rushing up there this Spring/Summer/Fall, unless the intention is to fish the reservoir or higher elevation lakes. We are in the third year of a drought which has seen very little snowpack in the Sierras…Bridgeport Reservoir will not be anywhere near this full:

IMGP0290

The RES.  – Spring 2011…it was full – then…I will not fish the East Walker during the stated periods unless the flows are at least 100-125cfs.

A simple Brassie pattern that may be tied on straight or curved hooks. I started coating the wire wraps with Dave’s Flexament, then UV Resin several years ago, up in Montana. This pattern really works well on reddish bottomed stream beds like the Stillwater in MT. I use it during the first PMD hatches that occur there just when the run off starts, in late June – early July and fish it along the edges and softer water. Use different colored wires for other bottom conditions but stick with mink for the thorax because of it’s ability to retain air bubbles…Mink is now available in a lot of dyed colors – use it !

MR. T CADDIS (UV2/TPI) – Matthews/Variant …

HOOK: Daiichi 1100, #16 – #18

THREAD: Abdomen – Veevus 16/0, White / Thorax forward – Veevus 16/0, Brown

SHUCK: Amber Zelon

UNDER WING: Sparkle Emerger Yarn, Tan

WING: Puglisi Trigger Point International Fibers, Black

This is an older BRF/Craig Matthew’s pattern that was designed for that “greasy sunlight”, just at dusk, on the Madison River. The black wing helps the angler see the fly under those lighting conditions. The wing material is treated with WATERSHED. so it floats real nice…

Like Ralph Cutter says in the article that I have linked to, “Learn how to use this pattern!”. Craig Matthews ties it HERE

Attractor patterns are just about my favorite flies to tie – and use…Many times we have been standing on an Eastern Sierra tail water and Michael will ask me, “Which fly should I use Dad ?” So, I peruse the boxes and after a few years of practical application and experience, I will choose a pattern and say, “Try this one” – with my fingers crossed behind my back…

Here are some guys that I and Ally will be using this Spring ( I’ll be giving them to her now since Michael and Aimee have moved to NYC).
