Posts Tagged ‘HARELINE PLUMMETING TUNGSTEN BEADS’

These will be various imitations that will be tried out by Michael and I in the Fall. Now I know exactly what they will be…I let inspiration and intuition deal with it…I learned that somewhere

HOOK: Gamakatsu C12-B, #18 – #20

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Gray – Abdomen – Tiemco 16/0, Black, thorax forward

SHUCK: Midge Flash, Lt, Blue Dun/Pearl

ABDOMEN: Gray working thread, * Coat with Hard as Hull and then wrap…

RIB # 1: Midge Mirage Opal

RIB # 2: Ultra Wire, Gun Metal Blue, x-sm

THORAX: Iridescent Peacock Eye, Purple

BEAD: Nickel Tungsten, sized to hook

Love these hooks which are available online from the Gamakatsu store for U.S. customers. This is an attractor Midge idea in Gray, with a flashy abdomen, double rib wrapped…Gray is an under used color for Eastern Sierra Midges and they (Gray Midges) are very present in the East Walker River…

ABDOMEN: Nano Silk 12/0 (or smaller), Olive -* Coat with Hard As Hull, then wrap

OVER ABDOMEN: Lime, Glow in the Dark, Flasabou…over the wet Nano Silk

RIB: Black Ice Thread

This and the following pattern, incorpoate Glow in the Dark Flashabou for over abdomens…this material has, in my mind some useful applications for Caddis Larvae and I will be doing one, in size #18 with a Black Tungsten, which will be sent back East for some testing by that guy from Trout Predator and Michael. As a Midge…I see it clobbering on the Lower Owens and East Walker Rivers…

OVER ABDOMEN: Flashabou Glow in the Dark, Orange – wrap over wet head cement

RIB: Rusty Brown Ice Thread

One note on tying with Nano Silk…this stuff is REAL slippery. I like to hold the tag end with rubber tipped hackle pliers and give two half hitches over my initial few wraps on the hook shank…otherwise it will spin off the hook…I hate when that happens…

WING: Sheet foam, .5mm, White

THORAX: Midge Ice Braid, Red – * Coat with UV resin

This is a variation on a Paul Freeman pattern used on the San Juan River. White foam winds add some interesting movement to patterns under the water’s surface and I fish these patterns from the bottom to the top of the column…check out Paul’s site for some other proven Midge patterns…

WING(s): Krystal Flash, UV Pearl

THORAX: Midge Ice Braid, Purple – * Coat with UV Resin

A Midge pupa pattern, again going with a gray-ish theme. I fish ’em from the bottom to the surface but it may also be used as a dropper off a larger dry pattern…

ABDOMEN: Gold Micro Floss, Cascade Crest

THORAX: Iridescent Peacok Eyes, Black

I like this floss ! When used over white thread, it gives the abdomen a translucent effect…that is why tiers have been using it for as long as it has been around…just remember to use white thread, laid FLAT, beneath the floss…

WEIGHT: Optiona –  .010 lead wire, 2-3 wraps, pushed into bead

I really wanted to use this pattern along the edges on the EWR on this trip…the lower flows made this a difficult proposition…so, I did not…maybe next time …. ???

NOTE*

I used the above Paul Freeman pattern on the Madison River above $3.00 Bridge on Saturday  September 15, 2017. Right here:

…and caught two Browns each over 20″…

PURUV’s and SIMPLY RED (and PURPLE’s)

This was a KILLER pattern in May and September of 2011 on the EWR…this year…not so much…again, I attribute this to the higher temperatures and lower flows on the river..

THORAX: Spirit River Iridescent Peacock Herl, Purple…twist around thread and stroke to the rear

BEAD: Silver Tungsten, sized to hook…

Lots more to come…fixin’ up Michael’s Waders and so on…

The PROBLEM…why Michael’s rear keeps getting wet…a little sprayed rubbing alcohol reveals the source…AQUASEAL solved the problem…
