Yup……these are some patterns I will be putting in the East Walker River box for May 2014…some things I have wanted to tie up for awhile. If one has never been to Bridgeport, CA, where the East Walker River is located, I would not plan on rushing up there this Spring/Summer/Fall, unless the intention is to fish the reservoir or higher elevation lakes. We are in the third year of a drought which has seen very little snowpack in the Sierras…Bridgeport Reservoir will not be anywhere near this full:

IMGP0290

The RES.  – Spring 2011…it was full – then…I will not fish the East Walker during the stated periods unless the flows are at least 100-125cfs.

A simple Brassie pattern that may be tied on straight or curved hooks. I started coating the wire wraps with Dave’s Flexament, then UV Resin several years ago, up in Montana. This pattern really works well on reddish bottomed stream beds like the Stillwater in MT. I use it during the first PMD hatches that occur there just when the run off starts, in late June – early July and fish it along the edges and softer water. Use different colored wires for other bottom conditions but stick with mink for the thorax because of it’s ability to retain air bubbles…Mink is now available in a lot of dyed colors – use it !

GLOS MAT -1-GLOSSOSOMA CADDIS LARVAE – Matthews/Variant…

HOOK: Daiichi 1130, #16

THREAD: Abdomen – UTC 70 Denier, Shell Pink / Thorax forward – Veevus 16/0, Brown

RIB: UTC wire, Amber, small

ABDOMEN: LaFontaine Touch Dubbing, Pink

THORAX: Senyo’s Laser Dubbing, Tan

HACKLE: Hungarian Partridge

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT Caddis in the Eastern Sierras, which is not the only place that it is found. Most Fly Fisherman, who travel to those waters, don’t even know about it. Like Ralph Cutter says in the article that I have linked to, “Learn how to use this pattern!”. Craig Matthews ties it HERE

KISS MIDGE LARVA -2-K.I.S.S. MIDGE LARVA – Chartreuse …

HOOK: Daiichi 1130, #18 – #22

THREAD: Tiemco 16/0, Black – for the head only

ABDOMEN: Micro Tubing Chartreuse

Start the Micro Tubing at the head position, after tying it in, keep it under tension wrapping back into the bend then forward…one may add some Iridescent Peacock for a thorax- if desired. These are simple, translucent and portray hints of segmentation…fish this about 6″ off the bottom …

COPPER LOTUS -1-COPPER LOTUS – Egan/Variant…

HOOK: – TMC 100 SPBL, #16 – #20

THREAD: Uni 8/0, Olive Dun

TAIL: Coq De Leon, Dun

RIB: Uni 6/0, Black – twisted

WING CASE: Midge Diamond Braid, Black

THORAX: SLF Spikey Squirrel Dubbing, Olive

HOT SPOT: Datum Glo-Brite, #.5, Fl. Hot Orange

BEAD: Copper Tungsten, sized to hook

This is a variation on Lance Egan’s “IRON LOTUS”… tied on a straight shank hook with some different elements added A curved shank hook like the TMC 2487 or Daiichi 1130 works well too.I prefer keeping the abdomen thin on these patterns This pattern imitates a small May Fly in an attractor sort of way…A video for the original pattern may be viewed HERE
