These are some ties for my son, Michael to use, when he and Aimee are up in Montana, about the first week in August…They will include PMD’s, Epeorus, Caddis and an attractor or two plus a Stonefly…he can get his own hoppers , by checking at the waters edge -in the grass and bushes – and determining what color and size to use…

This Mayfly, along with the Epeorus, fascinates me.When they hatch, I have just sat along the bank and watched the unfolding, beautiful process…On days like this one, fly fishing the Stillwater River, near Nye, MT, the hatch is extended, lasting well into late afternoon…All I can say is, “Thank you GOD”

On the Stillwater in early July, in a misting rain…

THORAX: Dark Hare’s Ear, # 5

WINGCASE / LEGS: Pheasant Tail fibers

I have had success with this pattern in size # 18 on the East Walker River when flashy patterns just would not cut it over heavily hammered fish. Sometimes, Earth tones work wonders…

THORAX: Stalcup’s PMD Dubbing

A great pattern when Trout are taking emerging PMD nymphs in the surface film. This pattern, by necessity, lends itself to slower water below riffles and runs…

THREAD: Gordon Griffith’s 14/0 Sheer, Yellow

TAIL: Speckled Hen Neck fibers

BODY: Fly Rite, Pale Watery Yellow # 38 / BCS 49

HACKLE: Ginger ( may be clipped at the bottom to ride lower)

I fish this fly on the swing or with the Leisenring lift. It is a take off of Craig Matthew’s Epeorus Emerger. It has served me well on the Madison and Stillwater, particularly effective fished coming out of riffles and in soft water along banks.

THORAX: Stalcup’s PMD Dub

WING: Costal Deer Hair, natural, clipped to represent burst shuck, fanned in front

This pattern may also include Ginger hackle tied between the shuck and wing.I like this particular fly for slower water…the fanned wing helps to hold it stable and upright…
