This is, hands down, the best Crippled Caddis pattern I have ever used. I will be tying these up in Tan, Chartreuse, Amber and a #20 in Black (boring) – Purple instead. It is a old pattern that I have yet to come upon in any Fly Shop that currently exists. I will be doing some variations on this pattern with materials that have appeared since I came across this (below) little guy…I prefer to use straight eye hooks for the smaller sizes (#18-#20) as it increases the hooking capacity. I also like the Veevus 16/0 thread for spinning heads – one may stand on this stuff, it is that strong This bug works on lakes (twitch on a straight line) and on Rivers and Streams…fish dead drift upstream or in the lane – downstream…it kills in back eddies. The SBS will be up on Frankenfly’s site (see below) in the next week…he is currently Trouting the Ausable in Michigan…

THE STEP BY STEP for this pattern is now posted at FRANKENFLY…Father’s Day 2013

RCC PURP -2-RETRO CRIPPLED CADDIS (Purple) – Snowshoe Hare…

MAT RCC PURP -1-Materials for RETRO CADDIS CRIPPLE – Purple…

HOOK:  Daiichi 1110, #20

THREAD: Ultra 70 Denier, Abdomen – Tiemco 16/0, Black – Head

ABDOMEN: Working thread, Purple

UNDER WING: Sparkle Emerger Yarn, Clear (White)

WING: Dyed Black, Coastal Deer Hair

HEAD: Underfur from a Snow Shoe Hare, Dyed Black

So my eyes were going at this point and I decided to do this little fellow up using Snowshoe Hare under fur for the head. Stuff floats like a cork. If a Black version is desired, I would go with Micro Fine Black dubbing for the Abdomen and just to be different, a tad of Arizona Diamond Hair, in Starlight… for the TAIL/SHUCK…just to be different …
