Yup……these are some patterns I will be putting in the East Walker River box for May 2014…some things I have wanted to tie up for awhile. If one has never been to Bridgeport, CA, where the East Walker River is located, I would not plan on rushing up there this Spring/Summer/Fall, unless the intention is to fish the reservoir or higher elevation lakes. We are in the third year of a drought which has seen very little snowpack in the Sierras…Bridgeport Reservoir will not be anywhere near this full:

IMGP0290

The RES.  – Spring 2011…it was full – then…I will not fish the East Walker during the stated periods unless the flows are at least 100-125cfs.

THORAX: Mink body hair, Natural Brown

A simple Brassie pattern that may be tied on straight or curved hooks. I started coating the wire wraps with Dave’s Flexament, then UV Resin several years ago, up in Montana. This pattern really works well on reddish bottomed stream beds like the Stillwater in MT. I use it during the first PMD hatches that occur there just when the run off starts, in late June – early July and fish it along the edges and softer water. Use different colored wires for other bottom conditions but stick with mink for the thorax because of it’s ability to retain air bubbles…Mink is now available in a lot of dyed colors – use it !

I  have put together some  Caddis – emergers, cripples and dries  – in the following series. They imitate genus Hydropsyche , which is prevalent throughout North America…In the Eastern Sierras, they are present from May through the beginning of October. Good populations are found in the East Walker River, Upper and Lower Owens River, Hot Creek and in  a number of freestone creeks along the Eastern Slope…In most of those locations, they tend to be sizes #16 – #18…and Olive, Olive/Green, Brown, Yellow/Tan or Tan – in color…The other empty spaces will be filled in the next post…and YES, they will also be more Caddis…

Here are four more patterns that I’m adding to the already overflowing midge boxes that I carry…These are in colors that I don’t usually toss into the water. However, they have their applications, and the colors have taken many Trout for me when I have least expected them to do so…I do LIKE surprises and I fish ’em with confidence …

THE CAST

CHARTREUSE THREAD MIDGE

HOOK: TMC 2487 #18-#22, Daiichi  1130, #18-#22, Mustad c49s, #18-#24

THREAD: Uni. 8/0 Chartreuse

RIB: Wapsi Ultra wire, x-sm, Silver

THORAX: Ice Dub, Peacock

WING: Sparkle Organza, Brilliant White

BEAD: Killer Caddis, Diamond, 15/0

Chartreuse is a color that consistently works for me, on many different fly patterns…when this guy is cold and complaining, I have him put one of these guys on the end of his tippett…the whining ceases…

Michael on the Lower Owens River in early January…

GRAY LILAC SHAN

HOOK: Mustad c49s, #18-#22

THREAD: UTC Dark Gray, 70 Denier

RIB: Lagartun x-fine, Lilac

THORAX: Gordon Griffith 14/0, Sheer, Red

WINGBUDS: Orange Flashabou

BREATHERS: Sparkle Organza, Brilliant White

Stick a needle into the hook eye and apply two coats of Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails over the thorax…there are certain days when Gray works great…like real DARK DAYS…and there are many of those on the Owens River in Winter…

TOP SECRET VARIATION

HOOK: TMC 2488, #18-#24

THREAD: UTC , Brown, 70 Denier

RIB: Wapsi, x-sm, Silver

THORAX: Brown Beaver

WING: Sparkle Organza, Brilliant White

This is the version of Pat Dorsey’s great TOP SECRET MIDGE that I use. Notice that he employs 6/0 white thread for the rib, Superfine Brown dubbing for the thorax, 8/0 Brown Uni Thread for the rib and White Fluro-Fiber for the wing…different strokes for different folks…

TIGRE MIDGE

HOOK: Daiichi 1150, #18, TMC 206BL, #18-#24

THREAD: Uni 8/0 Orange

RIB: Wapsi Ultra, Black, x-sm

THORAX: Hareline, Dark Shade, Rainbow Scud Dub

WING: Sparkle Organza, Brilliant White

BEAD: Killer Caddis, 15/0, Orange

This orange midge, and other variations on this theme are in my boxes for a couple of locations where I have found them in the biomass…particularly, this place in late June and early July…This Rainbow dubbing is quite different than the Sow Scud Rainbow from Wapsi…I like it!!!

The following photos are panoramic pictures of various places that involve mountains, rivers, lakes and a kid with her favorite desert…Thanks to my daughter Nadia, I can play around with them and put them up…Most will be used as kind of “rotating header” through the coming months. Until Nadia assisted me, they were going nowhere. I have this nifty little feature on an older Olympus Stylus Epic that I picked many years ago…that camera has been in the drink several times … Being old school, I keep using all of my film cameras…I just like ’em…

So Michael says to me, as we are coming around this curve on the way to the Stillwater River…”COOL DAD, ROADKILL…stop I want to shoot it!!!” Here it is…I should have bagged the remains for Fly Tying…good deer hair on the parts that weren’t scattered all over the place…

This is one of many Trout on the wall at Dan Bailey’s Fly Shop in Livingston, Montana… Michael went berserk taking photos of almost every fish on the wall..I didn’t know he was using the panorama feature…that costs one hell of a lot of $$$ to print up…oh well…

This is a great spot on the Madison River, above $3.00 Bridge at sunset…Ally and I scored some nice Browns and Rainbows here…

Little Virginia Lake up above Bridgeport, CA…just about sunset when a Retro Caddis will put a bend in ‘yer rod…Michael had a bunch of “bends” on this particular evening…

The backyard at Montana Hanna’s in Nye, MT… unfortunately this primo eatery, saloon and fly shop is in a state of flux at the present moment…perhaps, it will open again?…

Ally and her favorite desert..at the Continental Divide Restaurant in Ennis, MT…that would be creme brulee she is preparing to devour…with an “evil” look…

The Stillwater River, South of Buffalo Jump, MT…a great place to fish Caddis dries in the evening….

Ally, taking a break before the evening hatch on the Madison River, MT…above $3.00 Bridge…

Ennis Lake at sunset…me and Ally had been down in Beartrap Canyon and decided to leave before dark (good idea)…Ally took this picture…

Madison River below Varney Bridge… I have caught many nice Browns in this back channel…and no driftboats go through here…unless they are totally lost…

Sunrise coming up over the Absarokee Mountains…Michael has a fascination with sunrises…me…SUNSETS

Down in the Channels Section of the Madison River, North of Ennis, before the lake…

There is one Big Brown in this water near Varney Bridge…I know, he broke me off…

Everyone of the little islands in the channels section of the Madison River have nice fish lurking around them… I like to FF in here in the early Summer and Fall…

Anyone who FF’s the Eastern Side of the Sierras knows this place… this was just after the first October snowfall…

Another nice stretch of the Madison below Varney Bridge…

Another view of the Absarokee Mountains near Roscoe, MT…on the road to Red Lodge…

My favorite section of the Stillwater River…

A Rainbow Trout that Michael captured, on film, somewhere…

The backway into Bridgeport, CA from Yerington, NV…this is a spectacular drive…

This particular nymph, which may look a lot like another PMD Nymph, was tied with a couple of VERY SPECIFIC locations in mind. If I were going to use this pattern say, on the Madison, Boulder, Roaring Fork, Owens, Big Hole,Big Horn, Jefferson, Missouri,Owens or East Walker Rivers, to mention a few, it would incorporate slightly different colors for the abdomen, thorax, and rib…I became aware of the effectiveness of Danville, 6/0 #47 years ago on the Stillwater River and on the Frying Pan River. There is a reason the colors work so well in just these places…let me know what that might be…

ALLY knows, but she ain’t talkin’…

I would use it here:

The Frying Pan River, several miles below Ruedi Res., near Basalt, CO…

The Stillwater River, near Moraine on a drizzly day in July…perfect for extended PMD hatches…

Ally made her first trip to Montana in August, 1998. Her Brother Michael was supposed to go as well, however unforeseen CIRCUMSTANCES prevented that from happening…A friend of mine, whose Father was a retired Superior Court Judge in Billings, MT offered us an opportunity to visit his Ranch. It had been a premier “DUDE” Ranch back in the 30’s and 40’s…I had never been in this part of Montana…

Ally stands at the entrance to Island Lake Ranch…yes, this Ranch had a lake with an island in the middle of it, as well as, 5 ponds filled with TROUT and a pristine stream running through the property…

Coming down the road to the Main Lodge which was used as the living facility for the owner and our dining facility on a daily basis…

This is the LODGE. In front of it is a TROUT pond that was stocked on a regular schedule for the grandkids…worms, crickets and small spinners were on the Menu…

This is “THE BUNKHOUSE” that Ally and I stayed in for 3 1/2 weeks…hated it…

This is the view that Ally and I had…EVERY MORNING…when we woke up from the back porch…

This is what greeted us from the front porch…those are the stables for the horses down below…

The interior of the main LODGE with steps leading up to the dining area…

These two boys, with Ally, are the son’s of my friend Diane whose Dad owned this joint…each of them tried to outdo the other for Ally’s attention…it had already started…

My friend Diane’s cabin clear on the other side of the ranch…long walk for those boys…heh, heh…

Ally and her suitors hanging out in the game section of the LODGE…

A view looking East towards Nye, MT and the Stillwater River…

Another cabin on the ranch…

One more of the small cabins with a pond in front of it where I took some nice Trout on midges…

Ally, at nine, geared up and ready to Fly Fish at MORAINE on the STILLWATER…Hmmmm, where have I seen that VEST before…?

Access sites on the Stillwater River, MT…

Ally’s first Trout on the Stillwater…she ate it…

“Hey Dad, I think you need to use a #20, Yellow Humpy in here on 6x tippet…”

” I ‘ll just wait while you rig up…”

Ally at Buffalo Jump on the Stillwater, note the “My Fish is BIGGER than DAD’s Fish T Shirt…

Ally’s reaction after a 12″ Brookie jumped on a wooly bugger hanging off a bubble and fly combo… dead in the water…

Ally with the “ATTACK BROOKIE” at the Lake with the Island…she ate this one too…

Looking downstream on the Stillwater towards the Bridge at Buffalo Jump…

Ally and PT in the backyard at Montana Hanna’s…gettin’ ready for some PRIMO STEAK….

Ally, swingin’ at sunset…Montana Hanna’s…

Ally, on the side of the road to Red Lodge, MT we had just had a great lunch at The Grizzly Bar and Grill which is down below in Roscoe, MT and were on our way to this place:

The MONTANA CANDY EMPORIUM in Red Lodge ,MT…We make pilgrimages (many) every time we visit Montana…yum, yum….

GRIZZLY BAR and RES ROSCOE MT -1-Grizzly Bar and Grill. Roscoe, MT…MMMmmmm…good eats !!!

Where the hay for the horses comes from…

On our way out, heading to Missoula…We’ll be back …(And, we were)…
