Yup……these are some patterns I will be putting in the East Walker River box for May 2014…some things I have wanted to tie up for awhile. If one has never been to Bridgeport, CA, where the East Walker River is located, I would not plan on rushing up there this Spring/Summer/Fall, unless the intention is to fish the reservoir or higher elevation lakes. We are in the third year of a drought which has seen very little snowpack in the Sierras…Bridgeport Reservoir will not be anywhere near this full:

IMGP0290

The RES.  – Spring 2011…it was full – then…I will not fish the East Walker during the stated periods unless the flows are at least 100-125cfs.

THORAX: Mink body hair, Natural Brown

A simple Brassie pattern that may be tied on straight or curved hooks. I started coating the wire wraps with Dave’s Flexament, then UV Resin several years ago, up in Montana. This pattern really works well on reddish bottomed stream beds like the Stillwater in MT. I use it during the first PMD hatches that occur there just when the run off starts, in late June – early July and fish it along the edges and softer water. Use different colored wires for other bottom conditions but stick with mink for the thorax because of it’s ability to retain air bubbles…Mink is now available in a lot of dyed colors – use it !

It’s hot…the doldrums..nothing is movingThe TRICOS are a paintime to pull out the fuzzies and have some fun…These are some patterns I carry with me for those occasions. Sometimes they work and sometimes, I learn new casting skills…like tossing some of the flies as close to the bank as possible under overhanging branches, dumping them into log jams and twitching them around mid stream boulders…

Taking shots from a driftboat…it helps to have a 10′, 7wt. on hand in high winds…

A couple of guys who put their raft in here, gave Ally a handful of these flies to use…(which her brother immediately appropriated)…

Kinda’ looks like THIS

Michael works this pattern…

Up through this section of the Stillwater River, MT…bank to boulder, boulder to bank…I might add…he caught some fish…

Since I mainly fly fish sub surface, I don’t tie a lot of the following patterns, but pick up a few from this Fly Shop from time to time. They have the BEST selection of Hoppers, Madame X’s and Turk’s Tarantulas that I have ever seen…There are other exotic attractor patterns I can’t even remember the names of …that may be found HERE….GREATER YELLOWSTONE FLYFISHERS…

A Hopper pattern that floats darn well…I pick them based on the size and color of what’s moving around at the EDGE of the water, not 20-50 yards off the bank…

I like fishing the above pattern down along the Palisades section of the Madison River, MT….

Bullet Head Hopper…

I like using this guy in softer water …around here…

The Upper Madison…around boulders and near the bank side vegetation…this hopper hangs low in the water and, if it sinks…sometimes, I get a hammering strike…

PMX STONE

A good floater to hang a bead head Krystal dip off of in turbulent water…I even get hits on it…

Off the banks, in this faster water…

PARACHUTE CRICKET
I have used this pattern in a bunch of different waters. It works real nice…

BLACK STIMI

I don’t know why, but this is one STIMI that has consistently drawn strikes for me on every river that I have used it on…it is just big and black and is obviously being taken for something other than a stone fly…

A BIG UGLY BASS BUG (FROG)…

This is something I drag out of it’s secret location and use when shadows are on the water. I cut off the weed guard, bend the hook and sharpen it, use a 2′, 0x leader with a 6″ 1x tippet and non slip loop knot or duncan loop to the hook eye. I bang this off the bank and retrieve it down stream, just ahead of the current speed with an occasional twitch. I dead drift it around rocks and boulders, again, with a twitch…The rod must be held low to the water and directly in line with the fly…NO SLACK…I don’t do this when anyone (except my kids) is around…If you try this, you will know why…

I say retro because it takes me back to the old “Lord’s of the Fly” Fly Shop that was located on Wilshire Blvd. in West LA, back in the early 1980’s, and was run by a pair of brothers, one of whom, now manages the Orvis Shop in Pasadena,CA. This Caddis Fly pattern, which I discovered there, has accounted for many selective fish on still and moving waters for me – throughout the West. I have taken many Trout on this pattern on the Madison River and Stillwater River in Montana in the evenings.

HAT LOF -1-

This place…

First some photos, then the recipe…

Tan Crippled Caddis

Chartreuse Crippled Caddis

Olive Crippled Caddis

Olive Crippled Caddis (top view)

*SPINNING DEER HAIR HEADS*

HOOK: TMC 100, Daiichi 1100, #14-#18

THREAD: Gordon Griffiths 14/0 Sheer, Black, Olive or Tan

TAIL/SHUCK: Marabou (appropriate color) or CLEAR Antron

ABDOMEN: Fly-Rite, extra fine Poly Dubbing

#16 BCS 21 Chartreuse

#3 BCS 30 Olive

#19 BCS 91/95 Tan

RIB:  (Optional) Largutan fine gold

UNDERWING: (Optional) 3 strands of pearl Midge Flash, cut short

OUTRIGGER WINGS: Grizzly Tips or Web Wing (appropriate shade) cut to shape

WING: Coastal Deer Hair / Dark Tips

HEAD: Deer Hair, compacted and clipped to bullet shape

This new hook from TMC ( TMC 212Y ) might be an interesting add to this pattern:

xETIMG_5208.JPG.pagespeed.ic.yrYnuNFyHX

Specifically designed for very selective trout like Japanese Yamame. (‘Y’ in the model name stands for Yamame as well as on TMC102Y.) The latest curved shank hook with a very wide gape for dry flies hanging on the surface. Good for floating nymphs, emergers and hanging parachutes.
Dry Fly, D/E, 4XS, 5XW, Forged, Black Nickel.
Size: #11-23

I fish this pattern dead drift and twitched or swung and twitched with the rod tip. Up at elevation, on Little Virginia Lake, this fly kills in the evening when shadow hits the lake’s surface…

Hmmmm…Michael might be getting ready for the MOTHER’S DAY HATCH…

Thanks for the new HEADER PHOTO son!!!

I will be doing an SBS on this pattern which will appear on another BLOG…the link information may be found HERE: 5.26.2013
