Per usual, I put them up then fill in the recipes and some details on the use of these Baetis and Blue Winged Olive fly patterns…these are just a few on many that I will post. As I have mentioned before, one can NEVER have these little guys in too many sizes, shapes, stages and colors…

BAETIS SPARKLE EMERGER

HOOK: TMC 900 BL, # 16 – # 20

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Black or Olive

SHUCK: Zelon, Dun, crinkled

ABDOMEN: Fine and Dry, BWO (038) or Tan (020)

THORAX: Same as above

WING: Sparkle Emerger Yarn, Dun

HACKLE: Dun or Grizzly Dun

A nice slower water pattern that I use…

…for areas like this on the Owens River…Overcast skies and a bit of drizzle help too…

CHARTREUSE BAETIS

CHARTREUSE BAETIS (top view)

HOOK: TMC 3761, # 16 -#20 or Daiichi 1560, # 16 -# 18

THREAD: Gordon Griffith, 14/0 Sheer, Brown

TAIL: 3 Pheasant tail fibers

ABDOMEN: Tying thread

RIB: Xsm, Wapsi Chartreuse wire

THORAX: Peacock Herl

WINGCASE: Black or Peacock Krystal Flash, 6 strands

BEAD: Black or Black Tungsten

This little nymph is a change up that has snared some good sized Trout for me on many of the rivers that I fly fish. I started incorporating chartreuse wire into many different Mayfly and Caddis ties after this character demonstrated the possibilities of its usage…I first plopped one of these into this river one day in mid September…

HARE PUFF BAETIS

HOOK: TMC 2487, #16 – # 22. Daiichi 1130, # 16 – #22, Mustad c49s #16 -#22

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0, Sheer, Olive

SHUCK: Light Dun Zelon

RIB: Wapsi xsm copper wire. Lagartun x fine copper

ABDOMEN: Hare’s Ear #4 ( from the cheek of the mask)

PUFF / WING: CDC oiler puffs (2) Light Dun

THORAX: Hare’s Ear, #1 ( from the forehead of the mask)…may be mixed with brown Antron

I use this pattern in soft water…it is a partiularly effective edge pattern in shallow water…like here…

Along the inside, against the reeds, on the Lower Owens River, below 5 Bridges…


TAN KRYSTAL BAETIS

HOOK: TMC 2487, #16 – # 22. Daiichi 1130, # 16 – #22, Mustad c49s #16 -#22

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Tan or Gray

SHUCK: Brown/ Olive Zelon

RIB: Lagartun x fine, Gold

ABDOMEN: Natural or light Tan Goose Biot

THORAX: Dark Gray Ostrich Herl

WING CASE/ LEGS: 6 Strands, Black Krystal Flash

I tie this pattern on straight and curved hooks...on pounded rivers like the Owens, a change in shape can lead to some rather interesting days…

My assistants, Ally and Michael would concur…

POXY BAETIS

HOOK: TMC 3761, # 16 -#20

THREAD: Gordon Griffiths 14/0, Sheer, Brown or Black

TAIL: Lemon Wood Duck Fiber – tied short

ABDOMEN: Brown Beaver – dubbed thin

RIB: Optional – 6/0 Chartreuse thread

THORAX: Brown Beaver mixed with chopped Brown Antron

WING CASE: Turkey Quill Strip / Green Holo Tinsel/ Clear Scud Back…covered with a dop ( as Michael would say) of 5 min. EPOXY…turned upside down on foam block

LEGS: Partridge Fibers

BEAD: Glass Gunmetal

Another little fella’ that can, at times, be a real winner… I use this fly on the East Walker River in the Fall…picture pumpkins…


RAFFIA BAETIS

HOOK: TMC 2488, # 16-# 24

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Olive

SHUCK: Light Olive Zelon

ABDOMEN: Natural or Light Olive Goose Biot

WING CASE: Olive Raffia over a strand of Green or Black Holo Tinsel

THORAX: Arizona Peacock Dubbing – Peacock

LEGS: Olive Zelon

I tie this pattern in shades of Brown, Tan, Olive and Gray…they all work. This is one good fly with a nice big hook gape…

Time to rig up…on the Owens River…
