So this year, with the CA drought being what it is, I get to try some new patterns out with Michael and Ally( yay !!! First time together again in four years) up on some still waters in the Bridgeport area. These will be a few soft hackles and a smattering of other stuff I’ve wanted to tie up for a while. Some of the soft hackles will be larger than usual for an experiment on Twin Lakes …Here are a few of last year’s  Lake Soft Hackles that worked just fine…I will be adding some Trout photos to this post and the recipes will be completed after returning from a trip up the road with these guys…I’m back !!!

MOO'S BIG RAINBOW VLR

A little something Michael caught today (7.31.15)…9 lbs./4ozs…. and, before anyone goes nuts about keeping Trout, this is a Triploid Trout that is genetically altered and will not reproduce. They come from Desert Springs Trout Farm in Summer Lake, OR…

These are some patterns that we use up on high elevation lakes in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. I put together some simple little soft hackle ties that work extraordinarily well for me and my guys. I generally use these  fly patterns in sizes #12 – #18 and vary the retrieve based on what the Trout are liking at any given time…I also used some other patterns that I have wanted to try out on this trip, in a lake. Those will be included in my next post . The largest fish I took, on this trip was 4lbs.(end of post). I won’t go into numbers, but I caught more fish in a day and a half of fishing than I have EVER caught on Little Virginia Lake…

When I first started teaching Michael and Ally how to use flies for fishing, the patterns were cast from a spinning rod using the fly and bubble technique. It is a wonderful method for introducing younger kids to fly fishing In fact, for almost two years, before they ever cast a fly rod individually, “fly and bubble” is what they did…it looks like this:

One may put anywhere from three to six feet of tippet material from the swivel to the fly. In most cases, we kept the tippet length a little shorter than the length of the spinning rod. This technique works in lakes and in rivers. It allows the caster to cover much more territory on the water. Using this system in a river takes some practice…Michael and I have taken and released some very nice Trout using this method on the Lower Owens River…in Little Virginia Lake and Trumbull Lake…it is deadly… explanation video HERE  and another complete explanation may be found HERE

Little Virginia Lake at sunset, the BEST time to be on the water… I prefer using Uni knots and Seaguar Tippet or Trouthunter tippet from 3x – 6x depending on the size of the fly pattern and whether it is a Nymph, Soft Hackle or Seal Bugger

Ally at five, learning how to use a “fly and bubble” along the shoreline at Lake Sabrina…

Michael uses a “Fly & Bubble’ with an Olive Seal Bugger, at the Lone Pine Creek sand trap, Lone Pine, CA…

There are two fly patterns that have consistently worked for me and the kids on a whole host lakes and rivers…they have been around for a very long time… I have two boxes stuffed with these guys and they ALWAYS work…

On the LEFT: Pheasant tail and Brown Partridge…on the RIGHT: Peacock Herl and Gray and White Partridge

Michael took this Alpers Rainbow ( Alpers Rainbows are triploid trout ,trout that have been genetically altered so they can not reproduce ) on Little Virginia using a # 18 Peacock Herl and Partridge…he nailed an even bigger Alpers ten minutes later which I lost, trying to net it…

…in case one was wondering about the stringer…

Here is the PEACOCK HERL and PARTRIDGE:

HOOK: Daiichi 1560 or TMC 5262 #12 – # 18

THREAD: Gordon Griffith 14/0 Sheer, Claret

BODY: 3 – 6 strands of Peacock Herl, twisted around thread

HACKLE: Partridge, gray and white speckled, from the neck ( I over hackle this pattern – it works for me)

As in – right here on Trumbull Lake early in the AM…

PHEASANT TAIL and PARTRIDGE…

HOOK: Daiichi 1560, # 12 -#18 or TMC 5262 # 12 – #18

THREAD: Danville 6/0,  # 47, Tobacco Brown

RIB: Fine Gold wire, or Wapsi x-sm Gold

HACKLE: Partridge , speckled brown, lower back

This is one I caught with Michael at Little Virginia Lake on a Peacock Herl and Partridge with my 10′ Scott A2, 7wt. and Tibor Freestone…

These are two simple fly patterns that are easy to tie,  for the novice and TROUT CATCHERS of certitude…this guy was caught on a fly rod and #18 Peacock & Partridge…

Ally…says SO…and she ain’t talkin’ about how many we caught and released, on this particular day, on both of the above fly patterns…this one…we ate…

SPINNING ROD & REEL

A good combo for the “Fly & Bubble” technique…

I have been Fly Fishing in the Bridgeport, CA area since late 1974. It has always been one of my favorite spots in the Eastern Sierras to visit

Back in the day, there were no shoulder to shoulder crowds – one could have the East Walker River to themselves… Then came “THE MOVIE”. There are still many places to find solitude if one is willing to walk…what follows are some photos, through the years, of me and the kids and some places we wet our lines…

Bridgeport, CA…a gem in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains…

Michael, working the willows with a RAM Caddis, along the bank of the East Walker River on a hot August day…many years ago…

The wee tyke Ally, hanging with the fellas on the East Walker River…just over her right shoulder is the little island that no longer exists in the meadow section…

Ally, getting mentally prepared for a day on Little Virginia Lake..fly and bubble or just a fly rod?…

Ally, looking down the mountain towards Bridgeport in the East at twilight in the Fall…

Bridgeport Res. in the background after a day on Trumbull Lake…

Looking West towards Nevada from a high vantage point off the road to Virginia Lakes…

Virginia Creek canyon in the Fall, lots of Brookies and Mule deer in here…

Seal Bugger and Bubble day on Little Virginia Lake,,,we were the ONLY people there that day…late Fall…

Michael, changing patterns on the East Walker River…

Michael, learning how to roll cast his nymph inches off the bank and under the overhanging willows…where the “BIG BOYS” lie…East Walker River…

Michael, up in the canyon on the West Walker River…Burke’s Aggravators # 10, punched ’em here…this day…

Hello Mr. Trout…

A Chart. Seal Bugger, Rainbow and PT

Michael re-rigs on the West Walker River…

That looks like some nice water!!!…

So…Michael prepares to drop his fly into it…

If one is fortunate enough to visit this area, I highly recommend contacting the fellows at Ken’s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport. Jim Reid, the owner and operator of that emporium, has been a good friend for a very long time. It is also possible to follow his FB Page for updates on conditions and good places to fish…the East Walker Forum is currently shut down…Also visit my good bud, Carolyn (a Fly Tier par excellence) at Virginia Lakes Resort, …

The first time I introduced my son to Fly Fishing was on Father’s Day weekend in June, 1987. Jean and I went to Bridgeport, CA to try our luck at Virginia Lakes, the East Walker River and Green Creek. Michael was four at the time and was required to put on an overly large orange life jacket to go out in a boat on the waters of Little Virginia Lake. He looked like the “stay puffed” marshmallow man… Michael has a video of this excursion, that Jean put together, which I will post herein when he brings it to me and shows his computer illiterate Father how to do it…There is a portion of the clip in which I bring a dry, # 18, beetle caught Trout to the boat, lift it up and swing it back – boinking the tot directly in the kisser..what an intro to FF!!!

This is PT, Michael and “PINKY” at the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, near Independence, CA on Oak Creek, in 1985. I weaned the “Moo” on trips to this location so he could see the life cycle of hatchery raised Trout. He always got a nickel to buy the little brown pellets to feed to the brood stock in the pond behind us. That is where Michael saw his first “rising” big fish…

Michael -AKA: “MOO”, scoping out the Brook Trout in a holding pen…

I believe that to get kids interested in Fly Fishing, they must first have the experience of feeling the tug of a Trout on the end of their line. This is Michael on a trip to lone Pine, CA with PT and my Father at the Symms Creek Sandtrap. This a great location to introfish with kids – swivel, bubble, 5x tippet , #20 treble hook and POWERBAIT… the fish are stockers…My Dad would chide Michael by saying, “You puttin’ bubble gum on that hook again?“…

An “older”Michael works a Seal Bugger with a “bubble” set-up at the Lone Pine Creek sand trap…

My first Tout was caught on a Bamboo pole with an Eagle Claw hook in a pond at the Sportsman’s Lodge on Ventura Blvd. in Studio City, CA using bread dough…

It did not look like this back in the early 1950’s…but it was really close – I could ride my bike down the hill to get there…

Here is a photo my Dad took of me with a Trout at the old pond at the Sportsman’s Lodge in Studio City, CA …1951

SPORTSMAN'S LODGE copy

Later, in June 1987, Jean, Michael and I spent a long camping weekend up at Monache Meadows, on the South Fork of the Kern River. Michael went out with me and learned how to drift a cripple Caddis behind boulders to entice the Golden/Rainbow hybrids up and out of their lairs…

Michael, crashed out after a nice long hike up along the South Fork of the Kern River..

Within a year, Michael had learned how to tie a Uni Knot and set up his rig for Fly Fishing. His next trip up to Monache resulted in his first Golden – unassisted…

“MOO” with his first Golden Trout…

Working the water on the South Fork of the Kern…with a Winston 7 1/2′ Fiberglass Rod and Hardy Reel..

Michael learned how to “read” water by walking directly down the middle of Lone Pine Creek, below Mt. Whitney with a fly rod, six inches of 5x tippet, #20 treble hook and, salmon eggs or red worms. Here he is instructing his sister Ally on the method…

When we were not fishing, we pursued another favorite pastime – looking for arrowheads in the blistering heat of the Qwens Valley…

Michael sucking on a Villa Rica, GA product standing at “Charlie’s Butte” in the Owens Valley…

Michael soon learned the fine art of nymphing, swinging wet flies, dry fly tactics and bugger and streamer draggin’. Here, he works a wet along the bank of the East Walker River in Bridgeport, CA using a 10′, 5wt, Scott “G” Series and a RAM Caddis…

The image “https://planettrout.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/mike-eastwalker.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

Ally, of course, was not to be left out. While Michael fished with a fly and bubble on Trumbull Lake, Ally went to the bubble and POWERBAIT technique which netted her this nice Rainbow stocker which she allowed her brother to hold…

Through the years, Michael has become quite accomplished at FF…here is a series of his experiences on some wonderful rivers, creeks and lakes throughout the West…
