LAKIN’ IT IN THE SIERRAS II…(COMPLETED!)

So this year, with the CA drought being what it is, I get to try some new patterns out with Michael and Ally( yay !!! First time together again in four years) up on some still waters in the Bridgeport area. These will be a few soft hackles and a smattering of other stuff I’ve wanted to tie up for a while. Some of the soft hackles will be larger than usual for an experiment on Twin Lakes …Here are a few of last year’s  Lake Soft Hackles that worked just fine…I will be adding some Trout photos to this post and the recipes will be completed after returning from a trip up the road with these guys…I’m back !!!

SOFT HACKLES…STILL WATER…(DONE)

These are some patterns that we use up on high elevation lakes in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. I put together some simple little soft hackle ties that work extraordinarily well for me and my guys. I generally use these  fly patterns in sizes #12 – #18 and vary the retrieve based on what the Trout are liking at any given time…I also used some other patterns that I have wanted to try out on this trip, in a lake. Those will be included in my next post . The largest fish I took, on this trip was 4lbs.(end of post). I won’t go into numbers, but I caught more fish in a day and a half of fishing than I have EVER caught on Little Virginia Lake…

PP&P,Ties that Bind…

When I first started teaching Michael and Ally how to use flies for fishing, the patterns were cast from a spinning rod using the fly and bubble technique.It is a wonderful method for introducing younger kids to fly fishing In fact, for almost two years, before they ever cast a fly rod individually, “fly and bubble” is what they did…it looks like this:

One may put anywhere from three to six feet of tippet material from the swivel to the fly. In most cases, we kept the tippet length a little shorter than the length of the spinning rod. This technique works in lakes and in rivers. It allows the caster to cover much more territory on the water. Using this system in a river takes some practice…Michael and I have taken and released some very nice Trout using this method on the Lower Owens River…in Little Virginia Lake and Trumbull Lake…it is deadly… explanation video HERE  and another complete explanation may be found HERE

Little Virginia Lake at sunset, the BEST time to be on the water… I prefer using Uni knots and Seaguar Tippet or Trouthunter tippet from 3x – 6x depending on the size of the fly pattern and whether it is a Nymph, Soft Hackle or Seal Bugger…

On the LEFT: Pheasant tail and Brown Partridge…on the RIGHT: Peacock Herl and Gray and White Partridge

Michael took this Alpers Rainbow ( Alpers Rainbows are triploid trout ,trout that have been genetically altered so they can not reproduce ) on Little Virginia using a # 18 Peacock Herl and Partridge…he nailed an even bigger Alpers ten minutes later which I lost, trying to net it…

…in case one was wondering about the stringer…

BRIDGEPORT,CA…

I have been Fly Fishing in the Bridgeport, CA area since late 1974. It has always been one of my favorite spots in the Eastern Sierras to visit

Back in the day, there were no shoulder to shoulder crowds – one could have the East Walker River to themselves… Then came “THE MOVIE”. MICHAEL AND PT – gone FLY FISHIN’…

The first time I introduced my son to Fly Fishing was on Father’s Day weekend in June, 1987. Jean and I went to Bridgeport, CA to try our luck at Virginia Lakes, the East Walker River and Green Creek. Michael was four at the time and was required to put on an overly large orange life jacket to go out in a boat on the waters of Little Virginia Lake. He looked like the “stay puffed” marshmallow man… Michael has a video of this excursion, that Jean put together, which I will post herein when he brings it to me and shows his computer illiterate Father how to do it…There is a portion of the clip in which I bring a dry, # 18, beetle caught Trout to the boat, lift it up and swing it back – boinking the tot directly in the kisser..what an intro to FF!!!

This is PT, Michael and “PINKY” at the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, near Independence, CA on Oak Creek, in 1985. I weaned the “Moo” on trips to this location so he could see the life cycle of hatchery raised Trout. He always got a nickel to buy the little brown pellets to feed to the brood stock in the pond behind us. That is where Michael saw his first “rising” big fish…

I believe that to get kids interested in Fly Fishing, they must first have the experience of feeling the tug of a Trout on the end of their line. This is Michael on a trip to lone Pine, CA with PT and my Father at the Symms Creek Sandtrap. This a great location to introfish with kids – swivel, bubble, 5x tippet , #20 treble hook and POWERBAIT… the fish are stockers…My Dad would chide Michael by saying, “You puttin’ bubble gum on that hook again?“…

Ally, of course, was not to be left out. While Michael fished with a fly and bubble on Trumbull Lake, Ally went to the bubble and POWERBAIT technique which netted her this nice Rainbow stocker which she allowed her brother to hold…
