Back in the early 1980’s, I used to fish a dry Caddis pattern on August evenings that was Gray (Yes, Gray and I don’t know the species which will require some research on my part) – on the East Walker River. I had the greatest success fishing this pattern along the bank edges, directly down stream. It consisted of a Gray Biot body, folded and inverted partridge wing (coated with a fixative) and a Grizzly hackle. I call it a “PITA” to tie fly…(One may surmise what that means). It killed – hence the name. This is a cripple/emerger version of that pattern, tied on a hook the I have rarely seen used by other tiers. These hooks, for me, are perfect for cripple/emergers because they drop the abdomen under the surface film…they may be ordered directly through the Gamakatsu online store…

This is Kelly Galloup’s “Goober Caddis”…Most people know his streamer patterns, many don’t know that he has designed some very effective Caddis patterns that were developed for the Madison River. The placement of the wing is unconventional and foreign to the eye. Trust me, this pattern, along with his “Butch Caddis” catch Trout just about anywhere…
GOOBER CADDIS CRIPPLE/EMERGER UV2 (Tan) – Kelly Galloup/Variant …

Some tools on a leather lanyard I carry in the top right pocket of my vest (L-R) Hook hone, Scissors – to trim hackles on the water and an ancient, leader straightener…Any of the patterns using hackles, in this post or in “Doin’ the HYDROPSYCE” may be trimmed even with the hook point or V notched…

ABDOMEN: Nano Silk 12/0. Yellow
RIB: Micro Pearl Flashabou – *Coat abdomen with Hard As Hull
WING: Bleached Yearling Elk
THORAX: SLF Prism, Sand
HACKLE: Whiting, Cream
This is variation of Ralph Cutter’s E/C Caddis, which has been around since 1981. I have had a lot of success with Yellow Humpys, when Tan Caddis are emerging, so this pattern , in what amounts to a “dirty yellow’, once the Nano Silk is wrapped around the hook shank, follows that line of reasoning and this design sits lower in the surface film…E/C stands for “emerger/cripple” – it is a proven design…Charlie Craven ties it HERE…
NEXT:…A little bit of this and that
