Here are some additional Caddis patterns for Fall that are completed…I wanted to fill a box with patterns that imitate the above species. Fortunately, the Myran 18 compartment box I am using has two more empty slots for another two guys that imitate a separate Caddis that I have seen in the Spring and Fall in some places I visit…those two will be in the next post…enjoy !!!
BUG # 1.
SNOOP CADDIS EMERGER…
HOOK: Daiichi 1130, TMC 2487, #16-#20
THREAD: Lagartun, 74 Denier, Olive
SHUCK: Amber Zelon
ABDOMEN: Working Thread
RIB: Opal mirage accent – Wapsi...not the spooled type
UNDER WING: Sparkle Emerger Yarn, Gray
OVER WING: Dun Snowshoe Hare – pulled upwards and clipped at an angle
HEAD: Fine and Dry, Callibaetis
I wanted something to sit in the surface film that floats well and that presents the abdomen and shuck below the surface. The sparkle emerger yarn is added to lend some bling under the Snowshoe Hare. There is another material that I will be testing out for under wings and to be chopped up and added to dubbing…it is on order from Bob Marriott’s and I am waiting for the call…the idea comes from some guy who wears scuba gear in rivers and studies the bugs up close…

Somebody on FB called this “The TECHNO Fly”. I have been playing around with this material for awhile, figuring it might have applications for Caddis and May Flies. Well, Michael will try anything and I have no doubt that something rather large will affix its’ self to this fly with my son wading into and ploopin’ it in places that are not for the faint of heart…If it is successful, I will be tying some up in tan, for that other prolific Caddis…like in here…

The R.A.M. Caddis has always been one of my favorite patterns for the Eastern Sierras and beyond…this configuration was designed by Walt Wiese…here is the video for tying it…This pattern, in it’s original form has killed for me on the East Walker River… the residents there, never having seen this fly, will be in for a Fall surprise…

I have been wanting to tie uo some of these puppies since I first saw this pattern in Allen McGee’s book: “Tying and Fishing Soft Hackled Nymphs”. This is a bit different from the recipe in that work. After consultation with my fly tying, GURU bud – Dean Endress– I decided to go with the materials in this pattern…in particular I switched from Swiss Straw to Thin Skin for the winglets. In my experience, swiss straw, for wings, gets mangled fairly quickly. This design, from Allen may also be used for Hydropsyche, Oecetis, Dicosmoecus, Chimarra, Agraylea and Lepidostoma – in the appropriate colors and sizes…His book has a wealth of helpful and interesting information…

UNDER ABDOMEN: Working Thread
OVER ABDOMEN: 3 strands, Peacock Krystal Flash, twisted
RIB: Green Metallic, Wapsi wire, X-sm
WING: Dun Elk
COLLAR: UV Ice Dub, Brown
BEAD: CYCLOPS, Brown/Olive…sized to hook (Wapsi)
I tie these flies in Amber, Copper, Rusty Brown, Olive, UV Tan, Blue, Red, Gray and Black. I use them during Caddis Hatches. When Michael comes up to me and asks: “What FLY shoud I use, Dad?”…I hand him one of these – while I think about it. They ALWAYS work…
